Dealing With Conflict

Excellent teams know the value of conflict resolution. They also know that complaints can be opportunities to uncover problems and to make changes. Skillfully handling conflict is a skill that successful teams can use over and over again.

1. Acknowledge the conflict.

Use good eye contact
Do acknowledge through body language like nodding in agreement
Do use nonverbal cues through voice and body
Do use focused attention

2. Listen.

Paraphrasing - repeating back what you heard
Use non-threatening questions for clarification
Do use reflection to help the others feel heard
Do use summarization

Allow the other members to have their turn and share their experiences.

Apologize when appropriate for any misunderstandings and clarify how it can be improved.

Ask open-ended questions to determine the problem by asking: How can I help to resolve this challenge.

Clarify what action will be taken to correct the problem

Thank the team for helping to raise and work together to resolve the issues.

Do not make the problem about the person, rather use non-threatening identifiers like I, or we.

Keep a solution focus rather than a problem focus.

Take action. When a solution is agreed upon, make sure the action is carried out.
